Amidst discontent, Labour MPs sign letter of support for Starmer

On Tuesday, over 100 MPs signed an open letter backing Kier Starmer, saying “this is no time for a leadership contest”, after MPs have called for his resignation.

Starmer has said he “will never walk away” and “plunge the country into chaos”, and remains committed to “[proving] doubters wrong” after Labour’s devastating election results.

Coordinated by backbenchers, the letter supposedly had no signoff from No 10, in a show of credibility.

Party rules require 20% of the Labour Party to trigger a leadership contest; the 103 signatories currently exceed this threshold that Starmer’s rivals must reach.

While both left-and right-leaning outlets acknowledged the division within parliament, left-leaning coverage placed a stronger emphasis on Starmer’s backing while those against him were portrayed as outnumbered. Right-leaning coverage, however, highighted ongoing dissent or implied signatory illegitimacy.
