PM condemns Trump’s Gaza plan
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has insisted that Palestinians “must be allowed home” following US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s controversial suggestion that the United States could take control of Gaza.
During Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), Starmer responded to concerns over Trump’s idea to transform Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East”—a proposal widely criticized by international allies, including Saudi Arabia and France.
Reaffirming the UK’s stance, Starmer emphasized the importance of a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He stressed that rebuilding efforts in Gaza must be prioritized and that displaced Palestinians should be able to return.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey labeled Trump’s remarks as “dangerous” and asked whether the prime minister would voice his concerns to the White House. Starmer, in response, highlighted the urgent need to uphold the Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, ensuring both the release of hostages and the rapid delivery of humanitarian aid.
Referencing the recent release of British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari, who was held captive for 15 months, Starmer underscored the devastating reality of thousands of Palestinians returning to their destroyed homes.
“They must be allowed home, they must be allowed to rebuild,” he told MPs. “And we should be with them in that rebuild on the way to that two-state solution.”
His comments were in line with Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who earlier acknowledged the widespread destruction in Gaza.
