CIA assesses lab leak most likely caused COVID outbreak
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has updated its assessment regarding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, now considering it “more likely” that the virus emerged from a laboratory incident rather than through natural transmission. However, the agency emphasized that this conclusion is held with “low confidence,” reflecting the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the issue.
This shift in the CIA’s position comes after former CIA Director William Burns called for a decisive assessment, citing the global impact of the pandemic. Despite the updated stance, the agency noted that both the lab-origin and natural-origin scenarios remain plausible, leaving room for debate and further investigation.
The agency has not disclosed whether new intelligence contributed to this reassessment. Meanwhile, the Chinese government continues to reject the lab leak theory, labeling such claims as baseless and accusing the United States of politicizing the matter.
The CIA’s revised view aligns it with other U.S. intelligence agencies, such as the FBI and the Department of Energy, which have previously suggested a lab leak as a possible origin of the virus. However, these agencies have also expressed only low confidence in their findings, highlighting the absence of definitive evidence.
The origins of COVID-19 continue to be a subject of intense debate and investigation, with access to critical data remaining limited.
Throughout the pandemic, right-leaning papers generally featured more articles that either supported or considered the lab lea theory, while left-leaning papers were more skeptical. Let’s consider if the same trend follows this revised view.
