Goldfish are South African duo Dominic Peters and David Poole. Together, they’ve been making music together for over a decade, with everything from house to jazz to more recently, dubstep, forming a part of a heady sound palette. Having just released their fourth studio album, Three Second Memory, the lads are on something of a roll too, and so it is that they’re shacked up in the studio with another similarly inclined producer, Dutchman Bakermat.
In short, Goldfish are the kind of duo who join the dots between the genres, and they’re just as capable producing pop music as they are keeping something special for the dancefloor. It’s a trait that’s immediately abundant at their live show too. As we touch down at Durban’s (ironically titled) Fun In The Sun festival, it’s clear that they’re a big deal – especially in the eyes of their fellow South Africans. A sweating, heaving mass of bodies receives them rapturously on stage, where they’ve just taken over from the aforementioned Bakermat. And despite the pouring rain, it’s clear that the masses are here to party.
And a party, is exactly what Goldfish stir up. Drawing predominantly on material from their new album, the hour long set whips the crowd into a frenzy that even they perhaps hadn’t anticipated. The biggest cheer is received for chart-topping smash, ”We Come Together”, a track that really id tailor-made for the festival circuit. Hands are thrown in the air in unison as the boys bust out their tunes, and in spite of the impressive array of equipment on stage, it’s the live vocals that are most rapturously received.
Various other party-starting jams and blasts of the ice cannon later, their next biggest party-trick is ”One Million Views”, arguably the finest (and easily the most tongue-in-cheek) offering from their new album). A catchy-as-hell tune that pokes fun at the crassness of the EDM scene, the joke isn’t lost on the punters either, with one of them even stopping to tell us that they “hate EDM”, before telling us that ”South Africa is the place to be right now for house music”. It might be mid-December and Durban may well be experiencing some unusual weather during our visit, but as Goldfish leave the stage to throngs of people lapping up their set, it’s hard not to feel like there’s something special going down in this part of the southern hemisphere.
