New AI guitar lets you learn the joy of music without the tedious part of actually playing it

A music tech company has unveiled what it calls the “world’s first generative AI guitar,” allowing customers to finally achieve their lifelong dream of being a musician without the inconvenience of learning a single chord.

The Melo-D, which folds up for portability and features a touchscreen and light-up neck, offers three modes: solo, sing-along, and “AI creation,” the latter of which converts a hummed tune into a guitar solo, meaning the guitar is now better at guitar than you are, and knows it.

Users can also type a text prompt — such as “sad indie song about my ex” — and have the instrument generate one on the spot, in what the manufacturer describes as “redefining music licensing” and everyone else describes as “redefining the entire point of music.”

The device can also convert any uploaded audio file into tabs or chords automatically, eliminating the centuries-old tradition of sitting in a bedroom for four years slowly ruining Wonderwall.

A company spokesperson said the guitar was designed for people who “always wanted to learn an instrument but never had the time,” addressing a problem previously solved by either making an effort or accepting you’d never learn the guitar, both of which are now obsolete.

Early backers on Kickstarter described the $399 device as “a game-changer,” “the future of music,” and “basically Guitar Hero, except now there’s no game, and also no hero.”

The Melo-D ships in September, alongside a complimentary download of a completely unbearable AI rockstar personality.
