Michael Gove proposes redefinition of ‘extremism’
Leaked documents reveal that Michael Gove is poised to unveil a contentious proposal this week, aiming to prohibit individuals and organizations deemed as undermining the UK’s liberal democratic system from participating in public life. Despite internal government concerns about potential legal challenges and division within the Tory government, Gove appears determined to push forward with the plan.
Downing Street stated on Monday that the government’s actions are prompted by an alarming surge in extremist activity, aimed at sowing division in society and undermining democratic institutions. Addressing this evolving threat is deemed essential for safeguarding the nation’s stability.
No 10 said, “The new definition and the accompanying engagement principles will be the first in a series of new measures to counter extremism. This new more precise definition will ensure and will be used by government departments and officials to ensure that they are not inadvertently providing a platform funding or legitimacy to groups or individuals who attempt to advance extremist ideology.”
On Thursday, Gove is expected to announce a revision of the government’s definition of extremism. The aim is to encompass groups that undermine British democracy, placing greater emphasis on ideological factors rather than solely focusing on verbal or behavioral expressions.
Gove will also instruct government bodies, including agencies, to refrain from interacting with or providing funding to any group identified as extremist under the updated regulations.
Some right-wing outlets have linked the decision to the ongoing Palestine protests calling for a ceasefire in Gaza – which they have been biased against since the October 7 attacks.
