Introducing: Spark
A truly self-made woman, budding London songstress Spark – real name: Jess Morgan – plies her trade in intelligently written, sharp-tongued RnB. The result, most probably, of an independent streak that runs through both her personality and her music. Morgan, it seems, is the sort of the girl prepared to forego tours with Marina and the Diamonds and big money recording budgets in order to stay true to her artistic vision. To find yourself on the verge of wider success, as she did, and turn away from it in order to follow your vision takes serious nerve, and for that we salute her!
It certainly helps that the tracks speak for themselves, too. ‘Take it Back‘ – which you can stream below – is dominated by downtown guitar solos, rushes of crashing drums and, of course, the precocious 21-year-old’s powerhouse vocals; a stormy, surging number, it’s a flare shot skyward alerting the world to Morgan. ‘Struck Out‘, meanwhile, feels more playful, fusing twinkling pianos, tribal beats and more dexterous wordplay than an episode of Frasier. Putting all jokes about sparks flying aside, this girl has got pools of talent.
