UN commission says Israel is committing genocide in Gaza

On September 16, a UN Human Rights Council-appointed independent commission concluded that Israeli authorities have committed acts of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks.

The findings, published after nearly two years of investigation into Israeli military operations and official rhetoric, identified four categories of genocidal acts: killings, serious physical and mental harm, deliberate destruction of living conditions, and measures intended to prevent births—each carried out, the report said, with the intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza.

Commission chair Navi Pillay stated that Israel bears responsibility for what she described as an ongoing campaign of genocide, warning that international indifference risked complicity.

Israel has consistently rejected the Commission’s legitimacy, calling it biased, and disputes the genocide allegations.

The Commission urged an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted UN access to Gaza, and called on states to help prevent genocide by halting arms transfers to Israel and pursuing accountability under international law.

Despite the report and its findings, right-wing media remain skeptical of the report, ironically framing the report as biased, whilst left-wing media highlight the allegations of genocide which they have emphasised in much of their ongoing coverage of the conflict.
