UK immigration statistics cause controversy

The number of visas issued to foreign citizens to live, work and study in the UK has passed one million for the first time.

The latest statistics have once again raised questions around Brexit, the UK’s immigration policy, opportunities for international workers and students, and refugee criteria.

Where the media stands on these issues played a major role in the headlines they ran on this story.

The figures were pushed higher by a record number of students, immigration visas for Ukrainian refugees and Hong Kongers. The number of work-related visas was higher for non-EU members than EU members, though of course for some hard Leave publications, Brexit is an easy revival tactic in the face of record immigration numbers.
