Starmer pledges renewal of Brexit deal

Papers once again returned to a Brexit divide on Tuesday after Sir Keir Starmer said the Labour party would seek a “much better” Brexit deal with the EU if his party wins the next general election, currently expected in 2025.

Starmer is set to meet French president Emmanuel Macron later today, amid preparations for a potential renegotiation of the UK-EU trade agreement.

“Almost everyone recognizes the deal Johnson struck is not a good deal. It’s far too thin,” Starmer said. “As we go into 2025 we will attempt to get a much better deal for the U.K..”

According to an interview with the Financial Times, Starmer intends to look closer at security, innovation and research as just some of the potential areas that a closer relationship with the EU could be sought.

As murmurings of the next general election begin to echo down the halls of Westminster, right-leaning publications took Starmer’s statements to suggest that Labour would be an unreliable government and any attempt to re-write the deal has and will humiliate the UK and Starmer’s party (which would be good for a Tory government). Left-wing outlets – which are generally remain-leaning – welcomed the comments.

Brexit will undoubtedly be a hot-topic issue once the election rolls around, in a seemingly never-ending clash between left and right, remain and leave.
