Sky News exposes embedded bias in Gaza headline

An article published online by Sky News has been heavily criticised for its apparent use of headline bias.

  • Four Israeli soldiers were killed, along with 23 Palestinian children – added in as an afterthought
  • Many of the children who were killed in the school strike were younger than the “teenage soldiers” who are on duty IDF soldiers, but are infantilised in this headline
  • The ages and names of the Palestinian children killed have been omitted/not included
  • Israelis were “killed”; Palestinians “died”
  • Once again we see the use of scare quotes around ’23 die’, a common theme by biased outlets throughout their coverage of this conflict
  • Israeli soldiers died in an “attack” while the school children died in a “strike”

In many ways, this headline appears to deliberately imply and cast doubt on the value and certainty of the Palestinian children killed.
