Politics and papers divided over Starmer’s lockdown beer
The lead-up to the May 5 local elections has been predictably filled with characteristic political bias. While the Conservative party has been embroiled in a number of inquiries and revelations in recent weeks, it was only a matter of time before the spotlight fell on the Labour party.
Footage of Sir Keir Starmer drinking a beer and sharing a meal with staff in April 2021 first emerged earlier this year. But following the imposition of lockdown fines over the Tory ‘Partygate’ scandals, Conservative MPs are urging police to look into the incident.
Mr Starmer has accused the Tories of “mudslinging” as a distraction, adding he was “very careful” to abide by the stringent rules and no breach had taken place.
As yet, it is not possible to confirm or deny events unless further investigation into takes place. Nonetheless, the UK’s major outlets have naturally divided themselves between the defence and the offence on this issue, and the angle which they have chosen to cover ‘Beergate’ is indicative of intent to influence rather than inform – and how.
