Keir Starmer criticised by union ahead of congress dinner
Ahead of the annual Trade Union Congress dinner in Liverpool, union chiefs urged Sir Keir Starmer to be bolder with his vision for the future of Britain.
Union boss Sharon Graham claimed that Starmer’s leadership is making the Labour party look like a “90s tribute act” to centre-conservative Blairite Labour politics.
Starmer said the Labour Party is “absolutely focused on the future, not the past, and the challenges that we will inherit if we’re privileged enough to go into government”.
Hot-topic concerns like workers’ rights, public services, the cost of living crisis and immigration are expected to be debated and discussed during the TUC – and we’ll be covering it as information emerges.
For now, let’s take a look at how papers have covered the union buzz in the lead up. Right wing tabloids took the opportunity to lay into Labour and weaken Starmer; left wing publications were in support of the successful relationship between Starmer and the unions, or avoided covering the story altogether, seemingly waiting for the delivery of his speech instead – perhaps for a more positive story.
