Israel’s plan to fully occupy Gaza divides media
Israel announced its intention to escalate its nearly two-year conflict with Hamas by moving to seize control of Gaza City — a move that has heightened concern for both Palestinian civilians and the Israeli hostages still held in the enclave, while drawing renewed calls from abroad for an end to the fighting.
The prolonged air and ground campaign has already resulted in tens of thousands of deaths in Gaza, forced most residents from their homes, devastated infrastructure, and pushed the territory to the brink of famine. While the timing of a new large-scale ground push remains uncertain, such an operation would likely involve deploying thousands of soldiers and removing civilians from the area — steps that risk further worsening Gaza’s already dire humanitarian situation.
According to an anonymous official familiar with the military planning, the takeover of Gaza City would be carried out in stages.
Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that Israel “will prepare to take control of Gaza City while providing humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside the combat zones”.
Netanyahu has hinted at even broader plans of taking control of the entire territory.
