In Georgia, Donald Trump turns himself in

The former US president Donald Trump turned himself in at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, where he faces criminal charges related to efforts to overturn the state’s results during 2020 election.

The 41-count indictment states that the co-defendants “joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome” of the election, and “unlawfully conspired and endeavored to conduct and participate in a criminal enterprise” following Trumps loss.

A grand jury in Atlanta indicted Trump and 18 other co-defendants earlier this month on a range of charges and an historic 41-count indictment. Charges include:

  • false statements to and solicitation of state legislatures
  • false statements to and solicitation of high-ranking state officials
  • the creation and distribution of false electoral college documents
  • the harassment of election workers
  • the solicitation of Justice Department officials
  • the solicitation of then-Vice President Mike Pence
  • the unlawful breach of election equipment
  • acts of obstruction

Charges against Trump were approved by the grand jury on the basis of a violation of Georgia’s RICO law – or Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization.

After being booked, Trump delivered a brief statement to reporters, denying any wrongdoing and emphasising that he had the right to challenge his 2020 defeat.

“We have every right – every single right – to challenge an election that we think is dishonest,” he said.

It’s interesting to compare the right-wing parallels between UK and US media, and see how they align in a similar bias – particularly over a figure as controversial as Trump.
