Farage unveils plan to send worst offenders to El Salvador, claiming UK faces societal collapse
Nigel Farage has unveiled plans to send thousands of Britain’s most dangerous criminals to serve sentences in El Salvador, and pledged to halve crime and creating 30,000 prison places in the first 5 years of a Reform UK government.
Farage argued that crime has risen to be at least 50% higher than in the 1990s, and that the UK is now “facing societal collapse”.
He claimed that the crime survey for England and Wales is “based on completely false data” – however, the ONS considers the survey to be a more accurate reflection of long-term trends, as it includes crimes that have gone unreported to police.
The ONS analysis found that crime has fallen overall in the last 10 years; however, there are important exceptions, including sexual assault and a rise in fraud and theft.
Prisons across the UK are dangerously approaching full capacity and overcrowding. A recent survey conducted on behalf of Reform UK found that almost half of Britons felt the UK is “becoming a lawless country”.
Left-leaning outlets cast Farage’s proposals as an unrealistic, fear-driven fantasy, warning that sending prisoners abroad—particularly to El Salvador—would expose offenders to inhumane conditions and violate basic human rights. By contrast, right-leaning publications lean into tough-on-crime language, celebrating the plan as a bold “zero tolerance” stance that targets “depraved murderers” like Ian Huntley in what they describe as an increasingly “lawless Britain”.
