Court of Appeal deems Rwanda migrant policy unlawful

Judges at the Court of Appeal have ruled that it is “unlawful” to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Braverman responded to the ruling with a statement to House of Commons, in which she said the government “fundamentally believes it is only by removing the incentive for people to take dangerous and unnecessary journeys that we will stop the boats” and that the ruling is “disappointing for the majority of British people who have repeatedly voted for controlled immigration”.

She also argued that judges’ concerns around the policy were not based on the possibility that conditions in Rwanda would be unsafe, but the chance that asylum seekers could be sent to unsafe countries by Rwanda.

Labour responded by describing the Rwanda policy as a “total con” and that the “Tory boats crisis has grown and grown” along with the total cost of the asylum system itself owing to “Tory mismanagement and chaos”, according to the shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper.

At the time of writing, the government intends to appeal the decision through the Supreme Court.

Here’s how media outlets took on the ruling.
