Trade your beanies for fedoras, your cornrows for long, loose pigtails and your Air Maxes for cowboy boots, because S/S 15 delivers us the death of all things 90s and the beautiful, unexpected rebirth of the 70s. We’re still wearing fur jackets (because this is England), only now they’re shaggier and make us look like Kate Hudson in Almost Famous – or at least, that’s what we tell ourselves. Here’s what else you’ll need to ring the changes in this spring.
The new denim mini skirt
Shunned in recent years as the ‘squarer’ older sister of denim hot pants, this spring, the humble denim miniskirt regains the spotlight, and it has grown up. No longer frayed within an inch of its existence, and the identifier of every female Sloane at a festival in 2006, now, the denim mini is A line, high-waisted and button-down. It means business, but in a fun way. Wear it with a close-fitting denim jacket and a pair of woolly tights while it’s still cold. Team it with something bright and cropped when it’s not. Alexa Chung’s take on ‘the new denim mini’, from her brand new line for AG Jeans, is the dream:
Speaking to Vogue, Alexa had the following to say: “I got my vintage blouse in Dallas last year on a successful shopping trip with Harley Viera Newton and Poppy Delevingne (Poppy bought a cheerleader’s leotard – I’m still jealous of it). The skirt is AC for AG – it’s my dream dream skirt that I was never able to find. The A-line was something we all nearly fell out over. I wouldn’t rest until it was perfect and finally we got there.”
Wear your heart on your sleeve
‘Flamboyant’ and ‘flared’ are two of the main words we associate with 70s fashion, and they’re the one’s we’ll be embracing again this spring. This doesn’t mean we need to cast aside our skinny jeans and find a way to look good in bell bottoms (difficult, if you’re not Jourdan Dunn) – instead, we can turn our attention to our sleeves. Flute-sleeved dresses, peasant blouses and jackets with fur cuffs are all fresh, floaty and wonderfully reminiscent of 70s icon, Jane Birkin (pictured initially, above), in her heyday. The Reformation’s Electra Dress is the perfect example:
Fringing
Fringing is one of those things that can look either very, very cool or very, very bad. This spring, unless it’s on boots (in which case, go and sit in the corner and think about what you’ve done), it tends to be the former. This spring, fringing is the best way to quickly and subtly update your wardrobe. It looks great in the form of a suede, or leather, fringed jacket. They’re also very easy to get hold of – every vintage shop I’ve ever been to seems to have a whole section dedicated to them. Throw it on over a white T-shirt and some jeans and you’re basically Mick Jagger:
