Camden Art Centre will host a major survey exhibition dedicated to Nicola L., a pioneering artist who emerged in the mid-1960s with a multidisciplinary practice blending art and design. While often associated with Pop Art, Nouveau Réalisme, feminism, and design, Nicola L.’s extensive work, which spans cosmology, environmentalism, spirituality, mortality, sexuality, soft sculpture, activism, and political resistance, has yet to be explored in depth. This exhibition will be the first time her full range of work is presented in Europe, and will run through to December 29.

The show will showcase her sculpture, performance, painting, collage, and film, all imbued with wit, playfulness, and radical subversion. Key highlights include a significant display of her Pénétrables, interactive textile sculptures that invite viewers to physically engage by inserting their limbs or heads, often merging with other participants as one unified organism. In addition, large-scale functional sculptures, such as sofas and commodes, will be featured, with some transforming everyday furniture into exaggerated, soft, body-like forms. The exhibition will also highlight her work in moving image, which became central to her practice from 1977 onwards.

A catalog will accompany the exhibition, which will also tour Frac Bretagne, France, Kunsthalle Wien, Austria, and Museion, Bolzano after its time at Camden Arts Centre.
