‘Station to Station’ art project announced
What is Station to Station I hear you say? The clue is in the name. In essence you might think that it just looks like an insanely awesome Skittles coloured train, but in fact there is so much more to it than that. This is artist Doug Aitken’s newest project, seeking to engage the broad public with new artists and cultural expressions along its journey from New York to San Francisco. In this sense then, an element of the project could be considered as a fast-moving museum on wheels. Aitken aims not only to inspire members of the public, but he also believes that this until-now neglected liquid platform will empower other artists to realise works that couldn’t have been made elsewhere.
This is a project funded by worldwide-established brand Levis, supplying hipsters with jeans since before it was cool. So, if you didn’t have enough love for Levis before, then wait for this… all funds from ticket sales and donations will be distributed to partner institutions of Station to Station to support other programmes and exhibitions in 2014. This means that anyone witnessing the project knows that their money is being well spend – on organisations that share a similar goal as this one. This sort of approach to art funding is more integral than ever, with financial support continually demising for cultural programs in many places in the world.
