Review: Huerta – Liquid Social
Much like the artwork itself, Huerta’s latest 4 track EP is a deep dive into the darker depths of tech house.
Opening with Zappin’, a smorgasbord of squelching beeps, futuristic machine bloops, and haunting murmurations of indecipherable whispers and laughter swim above and below each other in a battle for centre stage – a position already filled by the demanding bassline that fluidly ebbs forward.
Thrift Store Katana is lighter, a melodic conversation between synthesisers and percussion that carry the rhythmic groove to new heights, while Space Dolphins sounds exactly like you expect it to – whistling trills akin to dolphin squeaks create an eerie disjunction to the humming waves of deeper drives.
It’s pensive, moody and joyous at all once, and a welcome addition to the return of tech house’s true origins.
