Introducing: Lizzo
To say that Detroit-via-Housten-via-Minneapolis artist Lizzo encompasses a range of soundscapes would be somewhat of an understatement. You see, Lizzo has actually been a part of many of these influences, with a career history that spans more genres than a bipolar DJ set. Let’s rewind to that epiphany moment: Lizzo circa the 5th grade stumbles across a Destiny’s Child performance at Wal-Mar – Yes, Destiny’s Child had to start somewhere too – and finds the performance so inspiring that she decides to start writing herself. The decade that follows takes her on a round trip through some of the most varied musical genres: R&B girl groups (I.N.I.T.I.A.L.S., Cornrow Clique), progressive rock bands (Elypseas), solo rap ventures, and electro-pop duos (Lizzo & The Larva Ink).
Now, Lizzo has returned to the solo stage aided by a trio of musical collaborators and signing to Gross National Product. ‘Batches & Cookies’ is the first offering from upcoming album, LIZZOBANGERS, and it comes complete with this um… bonkers video. According to the ol’ faithful YouTube comments, ‘this is the future’. And if that future involves donuts and getting lathered with butter by two women, I’m totally cool with that. Check it out below:
