Black Techno Matters announces programme and livestream
US collective Black Techno Matters has revealed details of a one-day, multi-city event taking place on Juneteenth, the commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865.
The event, titled Liber8 US, will take place on June 18 in cities across the US: Washington D.C., San Francisco, LA, Richmond, Pittsburgh, NYC and Detroit.
More than 40 Black artists from across the US will perform on the day, including Bastiengoat, Suzi Analogue, Clark Price, Blackmoonchild, DAIYAH (b2b Stukes), Absentwav, Phacade KYRUH and WTCHCRFT,
And for those who can’t attend the event in person, livestreams will be hosted on Black Techno Matters’ Liber8 US sub-site here.
“We hope Liber8 US will be a statement to the music community and the world that Black techno matters and to show what’s possible when Black artists organise together,” the collective said in a statement.
Founded in 2019 by multidisciplinary artist Bernard Farley (aka B_X_R_N_X_R_D), Black Techno Matters is focused on “creating spaces, both virtual and IRL, that celebrate the Black roots of techno”.
“Our mission is to reclaim techno as a manifestation of Black expression in a society that has oppressed it by creating spaces, both virtual and IRL, that celebrate the black roots of techno. An assertion and a reminder that Techno IS Black.”
