Starmer Says UK Not At War with Iran, Just ‘Strategically Close’ To It

The Government has moved to reassure the public that Britain is absolutely not involved in any conflict with Iran, despite generously allowing the United States to conduct air strikes from British bases in what officials described as “a strictly hosting capacity”.

Speaking to reporters, the Prime Minister stressed that the UK’s role should not be misunderstood. “We are not at war,” he said firmly. “We are simply permitting a close ally to take off, refuel, coordinate operations and occasionally launch missiles from facilities located on our sovereign territory. There is an important constitutional difference.”

Downing Street sources explained that the arrangement is comparable to lending a neighbour a ladder. “If that neighbour then uses the ladder to climb into someone else’s house and set it on fire, that is fundamentally their business,” one aide clarified. “All we did was provide the ladder. And the matches. And, in this case, the runway.”

Ministers have emphasised that Britain remains committed to de-escalation, pointing to the government’s careful wording in which officials repeatedly state the UK is “not directly participating” in the conflict, a phrase widely understood in Whitehall to mean participating at a comfortable administrative distance.

Defence officials added that hosting American operations is a routine part of the UK’s longstanding alliance with Washington and should not be interpreted as military involvement. “We provide airspace, bases and moral support. The war itself happens somewhere else, which is how you know it isn’t ours,” said one spokesperson.

At press time, the Foreign Office was reportedly drafting contingency plans in case anyone else asked to borrow the country for a small regional war in the hope of boosting the economy.
