MoMA Ready: Body 22

New York’s finest Wyatt Stevens aka MoMA Ready has released Body 22, a 17-track collection of music produced between 2013 and 2022.

Of the record he says, “One Chapter Ends, Another Begins.”

Time And Space kicks things off with sporadic gospel harmonies that float in and out of choppy, skeletal hi-hats and moodier sub-bass lines. The persistent darker elements of the track create an elemental ‘space’-like atmosphere, as the higher, lighter elements weave their way in and out unexpectedly but with deliberate presence, much like the way we weave our way through time itself, sometimes moving, sometimes staying still.

I Want You To Be Free is a darker techno weapon that rhythmically accompanies lyrical personal – and human – spoken word promises: “I want you to be free, our time together we should cherish, I’m building a world for you and me – if we both should perish, at least we had each other”, while Secret Acid is less ‘acid’ and more laidback chillwave, growing in confidence – and basslines – across six minutes.

Tech-Nic takes a Afro-Latin drum rhythm and confidently marries it with a deep house chord progression that effortlessly dances itself forward – a stark contrast to Sugar Rush, an synth-heavy electronic number that unapologetically pulses towards a hypnotic trancelike euphoria.

Jrugs In The Club sounds exactly like the name suggests, modulating filters, choppy cuts, soft fade ins and hard genre shifts – whatever your ‘jrug’ of choice may be, the experience is somehow captured within one song.

Blessing closes the collection, a swampy journey to the underwaters of tech-house that ebbs and flows itself to climax amidst a cacophony of cymbals, pulsing waves and dripping melodies.

Overall, Body 22 is supercharged with energy, style, and suave in a way that MoMA 22 does second to none. It’s sharp but smooth, intense but immersive, and a wonderful collection of tracks that is an exciting reminder of what’s to come.
