Digital art collective Universal Everything present their largest UK solo show at London’s 180 Studios.

Harnessing the futuristic potential of digital technology, Universal Everything capture the soulful elements of human experience and regenerate them through the unconscious creations of moving image artworks. Many of the artworks directly utilise generative systems that, while void of sentience, “respond” to time and interaction by evolving and changing – meaning that, much like human perspective and emotional response itself, no visitors will experience the same thing.

The world premiere four new works – Primordial, Maison Autonome, Live Forever and Into the Sun – are part of this 14-piece exhibition that explores a wide range of human behaviours and natural phenomena, from natural ecosystems to evolution, crowds and collective parades.

Inspired by decades of visual culture and futurists’ attempts to depict the body in motion, Lifeforms embraces and subverts the power of emerging technologies, from high-end visual effects and real-time game engines to physics simulations and computer vision. Through stylised body movements, diverse appearances and mass behaviours, digital soulful life emerges.

“We created many of the lifeforms in this exhibition with generative software,” the collective said. “We design the computational systems that grow characters, plants or abstract lifeforms – yet personalities emerge by themselves.”
