Band of the Week Introducing: Cults

There are no shortage of ‘couple bands’ on the market, so when The Cults came across the Prime Planet desk there was some eye rolling for yet another happy, ‘creative’ couple. However, after listening to their self-titled debut album we’re slightly worried that the relationship between Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion (a stage name in reference to film, Videodrome) might be closer to the one you’ve been telling your friend that’s losing all their hair to get out of.

The pair both hail from San Diego, California, only to relocate to New York to study film at the New School. The two began making some music together, and after some encouragement from friends, put a few selected tracks up on bandcamp for said friends’ enjoyment, only to forget to attach names to the tracks and, in general, forget the post. It wasn’t until the music trollers of the interweb  began obsessing about the tunes that the couple remembered their musical side project.

The Cults’ self-titled debut album is not something to forget about. With harmonies, and at times call-and-response duets, between the pair that sound like ’60s pop, coupled with seedy lyrics and recordings of classic cult leaders it creates a sort of goth meets Grease in a way we didn’t know we wanted.

The Cults are playing tomorrow (24th May) at the Scala in London, along with a handful of other dates in the UK. The debut album is out 30th May. For more information on the band they’ve graduated from bandcamp to an official website!
